Motorcycle accidents often lead to the most catastrophic injuries. Since motorcyclists don’t have the same protection that drivers in passenger vehicles do, they often sustain serious injuries that can have long-term or even permanent damage. One of the most common injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident is road rashes.
What Are Road Rashes?
Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. This often occurs when a motorcyclist falls off their bike at high speed and their skin gets scraped off by the concrete. Road rash injuries are often extremely painful and require extensive medical treatment.

Get StartedTips to Treat Road Rash Injuries
If you have sustained serious road rash injuries, you should seek medical attention immediately. A medical professional will first need to clean the wound to remove all of the debris before further treatment. However, if you suffered a first-degree road rash, you should follow these steps:
-
Wash your hands before treating your injury
-
Try to remove any dirt or particles carefully under lukewarm water. Try to be gentle when cleaning the area. If you are having trouble cleaning the wound, you should seek medical attention.
-
Cover the scrape with a thin layer of antibiotic salve or petroleum jelly, and then cover the wound with a bandage to keep the wound from getting an infection.
Treating Second or Third-Degree Wounds
If your scrape has damaged a nerve or has scraped several layers of skin, you must seek immediate medical attention to prevent severe infection. In some cases, road rashes require surgery to repair the skin. It is important to note that even if you do not feel pain, you should not assume that your injury is minor. Road rash injuries can damage tissue below the skin, which can include muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, veins, arteries, bones, and internal organs.
