Many Phoenix residents may not be aware of a recent report in what may seem like an ironic story, a product designed to protect sunbathers from burns may actually itself result in causing burn injuries. The sunscreen was manufactured under the Banana Boat label, and includes 23 different products. Two of these products were specifically marketed towards the use on children. However, at least five victims have suffered burn injuries after using this product.
According to the manufacturer, which has since issued a recall for the defective products, the sunscreen is dispensed in too large a quantity because of the defective design of the dispenser, which makes drying time excessive. While the sunscreen is drying, if the product comes in contact with a spark or a source of flame, then it is possible that this could create a fire on the person’s body. There was no information provided on whether the contents of the sunscreen were an issue, or just the mechanism in which the product was dispersed from the can.
