The Fourth of July weekend is just around the corner. Although Independence Day is often filled with drinks by the pool, steak on the grill and fireworks in the sky, a weekend of fun can quickly turn sour. In 2020, police officers made hundreds of Phoenix DUI arrests across the country over the Fourth of July weekend.
Why Are DUI Arrests So High During Independence Day Weekend?
Police officers are patrolling heavily during the fourth of July weekend due to high numbers of intoxicated drivers in past years. According to news broadcasters, 448 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in 2021, according to the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Of those arrests, 103 were for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.
Law enforcement conducted a total of 8,270 traffic stops compared to 5,240 in 2020.

Get StartedHow to Celebrate Safely
-
If you plan to drink during the holiday season, be sure to plan ahead of time and assign a designated driver.
-
Even if you’ve only had one drink, you should refrain from getting behind the wheel since you can still be at risk of getting a DUI.
-
If you see someone who is impaired trying to get behind the wheel, take away their keys and make arrangements to make sure they get home safely.
