According to a spokesman for the police, the man was driving very erratically. He had gone back and forth across several lanes of traffic, creating a dangerous situation for drivers of other cars and their passengers. He had also taken his car onto the shoulder of the road repeatedly, and had gotten in front of a number of other vehicles. The police emphasized that the arresting officer had great concern for the safety of others in the area.
When arrested, there was a significant scent of alcohol coming from the man’s car. Additionally, the arresting officer said that the man’s speech was slurred and his eyes were red.
He was also going 70 miles per hour. Unfortunately, the speed limit was 55 miles per hour. Also, his car registration was expired and had been suspended. When given field sobriety tests, he failed three times and then refused to take a breathalyzer.
Weeks earlier, the man had pled guilty to one count of operating a boat while under the influence. In that incident, his boat had crashed into another boat while he was driving it drunk. It happened on the Magothy River, and he was injured as were several other people.
He had also told a local news station that that he was an alcoholic, and acknowledged that no one should drink and drive. At the time, he stated that he was going to start an alcohol treatment program. This latest incident has some calling for his resignation.
