Thanksgiving is a holiday where family and friends come together to eat food and watch football. It’s a time to relax and enjoy each other’s company. However, it’s also a time when people tend to drink a bit too much. And that’s why the day before Thanksgiving has some of the highest Phoenix DUI rates in the country.
In Arizona, Thanksgiving is a particularly dangerous time on the roads. In 2021, there were 350 DUI arrests in Arizona on Thanksgiving weekend. That’s an average of 116 arrests per day, and those are just the arrests that were made – there are likely many more people who drove drunk but weren’t caught.
DUI Arrests on Thanksgiving Weekend
Arizona law enforcement officers are in full force every year during Thanksgiving weekend, looking for drunk drivers. If you are arrested for DUI, there are some things you should know and do to protect your rights.
1. Exercise your right to remain silent. You may think that if you cooperate and answer the officer’s questions, they will let you go. But anything you say can and will be used against you in court. So, it is best to politely decline to answer any questions and ask to speak to a lawyer immediately.
2. Take note of everything that happened leading up to your arrest. This includes where you were coming from, what time it was, how much alcohol you had to drink, and anything else you can remember. This information will be helpful to your lawyer as they prepare your defense.
3. Request a DMV hearing within seven days of your arrest. If you do not request a hearing, your driver’s license will automatically be suspended for 90 days. A DMV hearing is your opportunity to contest the suspension of your license.
4. Get in touch with an experienced DUI defense lawyer as soon as possible. The sooner you have a lawyer on your side, the better chance you have of getting a favorable outcome in your case.
